Finding Bahia Palace in the medina

Bahia Palace is in Marrakech’s medina, about a 15-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna along Rue Riad Zitoun el-Jdid to the entrance. If you are already at Jemaa El-Fna, that gives you a direct route through the medina.

You can ask a petit taxi to go to Place des Ferblantiers, then walk about five minutes to the entrance. The palace can also be one stop in a broader one-day Marrakech route.

What to look for in the palace

What to look for in the palace

Bahia Palace combines courtyards and gardens with salons, outbuildings and annexes. Its decoration includes marble, moucharabieh, zellij, stained glass, carved and painted wood, and stucco; fountains feature in the courtyards.

The palace’s history spans several stages. Its original residence was renovated in 1866–1867. Si Moussa, chamberlain to Sultan Moulay Hassan in 1894 and Grand Vizier to Moulay Abdelaziz until his death in 1900, began the palace as his residence.

From 1894, Ba Ahmed expanded it, with construction continuing for six years, from 1894 to 1900. In 1912, it was renovated when it became the residence of the French Resident General in Marrakech.

The complex also includes a Moorish bath, treasure rooms and an Agdal. Only part of the palace is open to visitors, so the areas accessible during a visit may vary.
